7.14.11 Hotham Island anchoring, recommended to us by Kevin and Evelyn

We are feeling a bit more at ease making our way through the passages and harbors. Starting to get a feel for the land and how better to interpret the charts. We left late morning for a 3 or so hour journey to Hotham Island. We have numerous charts from lots of sources and are making good use of all of them. We also almost forgot about the government charts from Larry we had stored in the top of a closet at home. Thank you's to Dave and Rose, Jake and Sue and Larry...
Today we used all these resources to make the passage known as LIttle Detroit. It is a really narrow although short, natural cut through a section of land masses. It cuts off an hour or so by sail to get to McBean Channel. The passage is so narrow, around 100 foot and curves, that only one boat traverses at a time in one direction. About 1/4 mile long. Water is about 40 feet deep. Absolutely beautiful, though I wasn't steering and neither was "Chris" (auto pilot). The area here has more forest and even a few very small sandy beach areas. Off in the distance we can see the mountains of the mainland. The inlet is filling up. We were 3rd to enter and at last count, 8 total. We've just started seeing sailboats in any number. Not surprising I guess since it would be difficult to sail these inlets with the need to correct course so often to avoid collisions. It has been a good course in navigation for JIm. He really enjoys plotting the routes.
